Commissioned Writer
Hanna Guttorm, Finland
Hanna Ellen Guttorm fumbles to learn a more sustainable way of living on the Earth in-between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous worlds as well as in-between arts and sciences. She has revitalised the language (and culture) of her father, North Sámi, and moves, thinks, feels, and is affected – and vulnerable – within the discourses and materialities of which she happens to live. She is a senior researcher at the University of Helsinki focusing on Indigenous Studies and is a member of Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Sciences. She is also an Associate Professor in Sámi Teacher Education at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Guovdageaidnu.
Prayers, or Love letters
Pyhä Maa
Hyvä Maa
Rakas Maa
Tässä me olemme
Näet meidät
Tunnet meidät
Näet tuskamme, näet kipumme
Näet epätoivomme pohjan
Näet väsymyksemme syvyyden
Tunnet toistuvat tarinamme
Kuulet hiljaiset huokauksemme
Taasko
Ainako vain
Yhäkö vain
Kapitaali
Kehitys
Enemmän ja pidemmälle
Nopeammin ja helpommin
Emme halua luopua mistään
Vaikka tiedämme
Vaikka tiedämme hiilijalanjälkemme
Vaikka tiedämme, ettet kestä
Tai kestät kyllä,
Löydät kyllä uuden tasapainon
Onko siinä tasapainossa paikkaa, elintilaa meille
Näet, kun meille pienille tekijöille
Minotarian, Indigenous peoples, children, small capital – maybe just a cloth – owners,
Arvoille
Laeille
Ehdottomuuksille
Niin että lopulta mekin opimme
Että
Mittaamalla ja laskemalla lopulta paremmin tietää
Että
Kehoon, kokemukseen, lähiympäristön mieleen ei voi luottaa
Että
Taistelu kannattaa
Ei enää sopuisuus
Ei enää verddevuohta[1]
Ei enää vuollegašvuohta[2]
Hyvä Maa
Pyhä Maa,
Auta meitä muistamaan kaiken kiertokulku
Kaiken heijastuminen takaisin
Vastavuoroisuus
Tämä yhteinen Maa
Jossa rajojen ja polarisuuksien rakentamiselle ei ole
Tilaa
Sijaa
Aikaa
Yksi yhteinen Maa
Yksi Planeetta
[1] Verddevuohta is an old Sámi concept for reciprocity between people, where philosophy of gift works – it is about taking care of your equals, when they are in need, exchanging things and services in a non-monetary exchange, in an equal and reciprocal relationship.
[1] Vuollegasvuohta could be translated as humility, or humbleness. It is about the human being dependent and responsible of taking care of the environment and of the relations, asking for permission to use a place in forest or fells, leaving the places as they were, leaving no traces, using only that much what is needed, giving back, blessing, respecting and thanking e.g. the salmon or reindeer for sacrificing themselves.
Prayers, or Love Letters
Sacred Earth
Good Earth
Dear Earth
Here we are
You see us
You know us
You see our pain, you see our ache
You see the bottom of our despair
You see the depth of our fatigue
You know our repeated stories
You hear our silent sighs
When we just ask why again
When we just ask
Why still
Capital
Development
More and further
Faster and easier
We don’t want to give anything up
Although we know
Although we know our carbon footprint
Although we know you can’t t bear it
Or, you can bear it,
You truly will find a new balance
Is there a place, a living space for us in that balance?
You see, when we little actors,
Minotarian, Indigenous peoples, children, small capital – maybe just a cloth – owners,
are not given options
When they take away from us
When the big capitals come and take our land, our grazing land, our fishing waters, our forests, our bodies, our minds
When our knowledge was taken nonchalantly
When we were taught the ways of Western civilization
The values
The laws
The absolutes
So that in the end we learnt too
That
by measuring and calculating, you finally know better
That
you cannot trust the body, the experience, nor the mind of the nearest surrounding environment
That
the fight is worth it
Not anymore compatibility
Not anymore verddevuohta
Not anymore vuollegašvuohta
Good Earth
Sacred Earth,
Help us remember the circulation of everything
The reflection/diffraction of everything back/forth
Reciprocity
This shared Earth
Where there is no room
No place
No time
for building boundaries and polarities
One shared Earth
Huomata
Havahtua
Kuulla epätoivoa
Väsymystä
Ahdistusta
Syyllisyyttä
For this/that/your/my human (and other than human) bodymind,
For this/that kind of wildflower/butterfly/moment-and-eternity-living material/piece of Earth/place
With you (how difficult it is to speak and write when words already create a limit, as if we were separate)
I mourn the supremacy of capitalism (don’t ask what would be a better social order, I don’t know, in the world/awareness/pursuit of exploitation and selfishness, always slipping into it, it should not be possible to create completely equal systems, let alone living and flourishing for a long time),
Of the normative bias of being right and knowing others,
And of colonialism (all of us have been colonized, at least tried to, our bodyminds have been displaced, taken over from presence and a good-enough-life, from taking-only-the-necessary, to perform, to qualify, to build a status/name/identity and to steal material possessions, money, into one’s own or another’s pocket),
Everything that has made us forget and ignore our nature, our basic nature
And made us scurry
We don’t have time to halt
To recognise, to become aware
To realize, to awaken
To hear despair
Fatigue
Anxiety
Guilt
